Orven "Corky" Iverson of Vacaville and Fairfield went home to be with The Lord on Jan. 15. He was 90.
One of 13 children, Corky was born on Sept. 18, 1921, to Henry and Pearl Iverson in Notus, Idaho.
Farm work as a boy helped build the strength to excel in sports, his lifetime passion. Known from school days as "Corky," he left college to serve in the United States Air Force during World War II. He was a B-25 pilot with the 434th Bombardment Squadron flying in the China Burma India theater. During this time, his closeness to God was a special comfort. After his military service, he returned to college earning a bachelor of arts degree in physical education and English, which led to a career in teaching, coaching and directing high school athletics.
He taught seven years in Oregon before moving to Fairfield, where he served 10 years at Armijo High School and 19 years at Fairfield High School, retiring in 1983 as the athletic director. Corky was also a part-time carpenter, which included building several family homes.
In 1943, Corky married the first love of his life, Shirley Denney. They were married 35 years and together raised four children: Steven, Michael, Debra and Christian.
In 1982, he married the new love of his life, Beth Hulse. This coming Valentine's Day would have marked their 30th anniversary. Beth has six children: Rick, Jim, Greg, Mary, Cathy and Mike.
Corky is survived by his wife, Beth Iverson and their children: Steven Iverson (Marllena) of Alaska, Michael Iverson (Sharon) of Carmichael, Debra Siam (Sam) of Modesto, Christian Iverson of California and Mexico, Richard Hulse (Darlene) of Nevada, James Hulse of Pennsylvania, Gregory Hulse (Angie) of Illinois, Mary Murtishaw (Chuck) of Vacaville, Cathy Wilkins (Tom) of Washington and Michael Hulse of Vacaville; 22 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; brother and sisters, Josephine Threewit, Alys Wyberg, Edythe Guilfoyle, Howard Iverson and Miriam Iverson; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Family and friends are invited to attend two services. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 21, at 11 a.m. at The Mission, 6391 Leisure Town Road, Vacaville. A reception and luncheon will follow in the church fellowship hall. Burial with military honors will follow on Monday, Jan. 23, at 1 p.m. in Dixon at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, 5810 Midway Road, Dixon, CA 95620.

Coach Iverson was a gentleman and and intructor who cared. He taught with the correct principles of life in the example he gave to all. I miss him greatly. I ran for him and TA'ed for him. See you my friend....
