Greg Usery - Class Of 1968

From the Daily Republic

Gregory D. Usery

Jan. 1, 1950 — May 18, 2013

Gregory Dewain Usery was born on Jan. 1, 1950 to George Hampton and Marie Peace Usery. He was celebrated as the first baby of the New Year in Bowling Green, S.C. He was the second of six children. He moved with his family to England in 1959, returning to the United States in 1963 where his family eventually settled in California. After marrying his long-time friend Denise on Oct. 13, 2012, he moved to Phoenix, Ariz. where he enjoyed his new life and extended family, until his passing.

Greg was a member of Fairfield High School’s first graduating class in 1968. He joined the U.S. Army in 1969, where he served nineteen months in Vietnam. He was a decorated soldier, the recipient of many medals, including two Bronze Stars and the Silver Star Nomination.

After returning home, Greg resumed his career with Solano County as a surveyor. Later he began a new career with the Los Angeles Times where he met his late wife Sheri Puopolo. In 1993, he and Sheri opened The Wooden Shoe bar and restaurant in Northridge, Calif. After the 1994 earthquake, they relocated to Arroyo Grande where he worked as an electrician.

He was an avid motorcyclist and enjoyed riding the open roads through the countryside on his Harley. After Sheri’s death, Greg retired in 2010 and moved back to Fairfield to be near the family he loved.

He loved his country and was proud of his rebel roots. He was always ready for the next adventure life had to offer. He loved his new wife, home and extended family, and enjoyed his new granddaughter Cheyenne and grandson Dalton.

On May 18, 2013, after a courageous battle, we lost our beloved Greg. He was a loving husband, brother, son, uncle, and grandpa.

He was preceded in death by his father, George H.; mother, Marie P.; brother, Donald R.; and prior wife, (Sheri).

Greg is survived by his loving wife, Denise; brothers, Mike (Betty), Mitch (Christie); sisters, Luan (Howard) Muto, Sharon (Monte) Hoover; sisters-in-law, Stella Usery and Judy; stepchildren, Cyndee (John), Tammy (Wes), Rusty; grandchildren, Michael, Dalton, Cheyenne and Logan; along with many extended family members.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, July 5, 2013 at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, 5810 Midway Road, Dixon.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to The Wounded Warriors at www.woundedwarriorproject.org or call 877-832-6997.

I am so sorry to hear of Greg's passing. He sounded like a great guy. I think the last time i saw him was probably in 1968 or 1969. My brother, Bob Carroll, was a good friend of his and i will let him know. He went to high school with Greg. My name is Sharon Lisko (Carroll) and i was friends with Mike and family. Please give them my prayers.

Sincerely,

Sharon Lisko (Carroll)

Greg was a very good friend. We all used to hang out together, Me, Larry Bond, Wayne Vig, Juke Webster and Greg.  We had some really great times and made some life long memories together and I am so very sorry to here that he is no longer with us. The world will be a sadder place without my good friend.  I miss you already Buddy and will see you later up yonder.
