Steven Seybold

From The Daily Republic

Steven Wayne Seybold

June 13, 1951 — Feb. 17, 2014

Steven Wayne Seybold passed away on Feb. 17, 2014, after a tragic 30-foot fall at a meditation retreat in Manzanillo, Mexico, when a railing he leaned on broke. He struggled valiantly to recover for seven weeks before he passed peacefully in a hospice center in San Diego, attended by his two devoted sisters.

Steve was born June 13, 1951, in Washington, D.C. His family moved to Fairfield, Calif., in 1963 when they were stationed at Travis Air Force Base. He graduated from Fairfield High School in 1969, attended Solano College and went on to Cal Poly to earn a bachelor’s degree in journalism. Steve loved San Luis Obispo and made it his home after graduation. He worked for the city as their first crime prevention coordinator and developed that program for 15 years, then later continued his employment with the parks and recreation department before his retirement a few years ago.

Steve was an active volunteer in his beloved community, being involved in numerous clubs, charities and local activities. He was a deep spiritual seeker and member of the Lemurian Fellowship, near San Diego. He loved adventure travel and wrote detailed travel logs to his friends about his journeys near and far. Steve was a kind and loving son, a protective brother, a generous and loyal friend and was loved by all who knew him. Personal relationships were important and he maintained friendships for decades. He spent Thanksgiving and other holidays with his family in Solano County. He loved the central coast, entertaining and cooking for friends, providing hugs to anyone he sensed needed one, and could recite poetry on the spur of the moment. Steve was generous, witty and honest. Anyone who spent time with him felt his warmth and kindness. He will live on in our hearts forever.

Steve is preceded in death by his father, John Rockwell Seybold; stepfather, Jack Felch; and brother, John Rockwell Seybold Jr. He is survived by his mother, Ramona Felch; sisters, Mindy Green and Lindy Desserich; nieces, Shannon Sebring, Destiny Granger-Kelly and Jamie Seybold; great-nephews, Anthony Sebring, Padrick and Liam Kelly; great-niece, Lola Clevenger and very close friends and extended family, all of whom he loved.

Friends are welcome to join us in celebrating Steve’s life at 1 p.m. March 9, 2014, in San Luis Obispo at the Elks Lodge No. 322, 222 Elks Lane, San Luis Obispo, Calif. 93401.

I am having a difficult time grasping that Steven is gone. What a tragedy. I got to know Steven well at the 30th reunion and I have to say he was an amazing guy. At the time, he was in law enforcement down in SLO and he and Beth and I hung out most of the weekend having a really good time. I will miss you buddy and have thought about you often over the years.

Steve was a true friend, a friend for life,a friend for eternity. We met in 1964 a year after his family moved to Fairfield. I will always be honored by his friendship and all that we shared. I'm so sorry for the Seybold family, Mona, Mindy and Lindy for all they have suffered with the loss of Little John and Steven. May they find comfort in the extended family that the Seybolds have.
